At St Francis School we aim for our pupils to develop a love of books and stories. We have a personalised approach to reading as the pupils have a wide range of very complex needs. Reading is taught through a phonics, whole word and sentence approach.
We have bought into the ‘Jolly Phonics’ scheme and some classes are using this as an approach to help our pupils actively participate in the early stages of reading. Our reading scheme is ‘Oxford Reading Tree’ we have a wide range of different levelled books following this scheme.
We have also invested in the ‘Song Birds’ phonics readers, which is a complete phonics reading scheme which forms part of the ‘Oxford Reading Tree’ reading scheme. The books have a wide range of new characters and are designed so that every word in each of the books are phonetically plausible.
